In Love With the ’80s (Pink Tux to the Prom)

Music With it Giles Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The music of today sucks. You know what’s awesome, music of the past, things of the past. Things…of the ’80s!

80s

I love the ’80s. The fashion, the movies, the music…It all is so cool. I would love to go back in time and visit.

NostalgiaforWorldNeverKnown

This shouldn’t really surprise any of you out there as I’m constantly going on about it. It also should be no real shock that this is one of my favorite songs:

In love with the 80s Relient K

In Love With the ’80s (Pink Tux to the Prom) by Relient K

I can’t find much information on the creation of the song, but it clearly was created by one who loved the ’80s. I just love the music and lyrics of this piece. In fact my senior prom escort joked about getting a powder blue tux, like the one in Dumb and Dumber and I told him he could wear one like that (I think they are cute), as long as it didn’t clash with my dress. He chose to just go in regular black.

So it was Jeremy in 1983,

In his ocean pacific tee,

Who got a bloody knee,

On his skateboard,

In the halfpipe,

In the backyard,

That tuesday night.

And I’m only gonna pierce my left ear,

And I’ve been working on this mustache all summer long,

And my favorite band will always be tears for fears,

Psych Tears for Fears Shawn Curt Smith

And I’m gonna to wear a pink tux to the prom, a pink tux to the prom.

Cuttin class through the first four windows,

He’s drivin fast because he never did a thing slow,

And I look up to my big bro cuz in the eighties all the ladies grabbed his

hands and couldn’t let go.

And I’m only gonna pierce my left ear,

And I’ve been working on this mustache all summer long,

And my favorite band will always be tears for fears,

And I’m gonna to wear a pink tux to the prom, a pink tux to the prom.

Do, do, do-do, do, do, Pink tux to the prom, [x2]

I am gonna wear, a pink tux to the prom,

Live without a care, what can possibly go wrong.

When you’re the president of the breakfast club,

breakfast club

And you’re not hesitant to fall in love,

To fall in love with the eighties, to throw it away

to fall in love with the eighties.

I am gonna wear, a pink tux to the prom,

Live without a care, what can possibly go wrong,

I am gonna wear a pink tux to the prom,

Live without a care cause you threw it away to fall in love, with the eighties..

Do, do, do-do, do, do

A great song that I hope my fellow ’80s fans enjoyed as much as me. 🙂

You May Screw Up, but You’re Not a Screw Up: Mystic Pizza (1988)

Romantic Moment #2

Mystic_pizza

Mystic Pizza (1988)

Mystic Pizza is a coming of age film that tells the story of three girls, and coworkers at Mystic Pizza, as they set off on different paths. Jojo is supposed to be married, but at her wedding gets cold feet. She wants to stay with her boyfriend, but is afraid to lose herself. Her boyfriend, Bill, is understanding but at the same time doesn’t want to be strung around. He doesn’t just want sex, he wants more, he wants marriage. Beautuful Daisy, is always reckless and the life of the party. She clashes with her mother as she isn’t as sensible as her sister Kat. She gets involved with a rich guy, which her mom tells her won’t last. After he uses her to get back at his family, she breaks off the relationship. Kat was accepted to Yale and is eager to go and study astronomy. Although she is getting a scholarship, she is worried about finances and takes on a second job as a baby-sitter. The wife is out of town and the father starts giving Kat the attention she has never recieved, having been in the shadow of her sister. Kat eagerly spends a night with him only to have his wife return and him treat their “time together” as a buisness transaction, trying to pay her off to not say anything. In the end, Jojo and Bill get married; the only thing changing about her is her name. Daisy’s ex, Charles (the rich boy), listened to what she said about him and comes back to not only apologize but prove to her he’s changed and tries to win her heart back. Kat rejects the dad’s check and forms a better relationship with her sister. Leona, the owner of Mystic Pizza, gives her extra money as she is one of “her girls”.

Most Romantic Moment:

So the girls are going out to have a girl’s night. Kat has the night off, Jo is on the outs with Bill, and Charles has to visit his grandma. The girls get drunk (heavily, except Kat) and steal Bill’s truck that full of fish and fish guts. They decide to drive out to the country club as they like to watch the people dance. When they get there they are having fun, that is until they spot Charlie talking and dancing to a blond girl. It is clear to all that they know each other very well.

Uh. Oh not good, at all. Daisy gets so upset that she goes ballistic!

tumblr_mdka4p1qoq1ryb0hd

She gets in Bill’s truck and dumps all the fish and fish guts in Charlies new red porsche. (Best payback for a cheater ever)

Imagine this full of fish guts! Yuck!

Imagine this full of fish guts! Yuck!

Now I know you are all probably thinking, what’s romantic about this? This guy is a total skeez for cheating on her. Now just wait, I’m getting there.

So Charlie comes out and sees her doing this and freaks. I mean who wouldn’t? I know I’d be royally pissed! Now Daisy is yelling and cussing him out for lying and cheating on her.

Then Charlie tells her he didn’t lie. He was going to his Grandma’s, but she went out of town. He called her house but she was out and her mom had no idea where she was or when she would be back. So he decided to take his little sister out.

That’s right. His sister.

images-2

So Daisy feels super stupid. And you know what Charles does next? I’ll tell you, and let me say it is pretty romantic.

“Daisy: I f***** up.

Charles Gordon Windsor, Jr.: Yeah… but you gave it a 100% effort!”

That’s right ladies and gentlemen, instead of being mad, yelling, screaming, or even lording over Daisy that she was wrong and did something stupid (a reaction that would have been understandable) he tries to make her feel better. His car has fish and fish guts everywhere, which you know will be an absolute PAIN to get clean and it will take forever to get rid of the smell, all he cares about in that moment is making Daisy feel better and make sure she knows that everything is ok. Now you might not agree with me, but I think that is a prime-A sighworthy moment.

So romantic

So romantic

I mean you know how guys get about their cars. Cars are like an extension of themselves, it’s their personal/sacred space. It is their provate domain, their man cave on wheels. And this wasn’t a trashy car, this was a new porsche convertible. And to not say anything, wow this guy is great. I mean its true he does have a few kinks to workout, he is a fixer-upper (who isn’t?),  but he’s worth having.

Here’s the scene for you guys. It’s great!

“Daisy: [After Charles tries to make her feel better] You’re weird

Charles Gordon Windsor, Jr.: I’m weird? [Looks at car, then at Daisy] I’m weird? [takes Daisy’s hand]

So adorable!

I’m Sorry Sounds Better in a Song: Music and Lyrics (2007)

Romantic Moment #11

Poster001

Music and Lyrics (2007)

I love this movie! First it has Hugh Grant, second Drew Barrymore, and thirdly (my favorite part) one of the best faux ’80s song/videos ever!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT!

hearts banner

In Music and Lyrics, Hugh Grant is Alex, a washed up pop star hitting up the reunion circuit/fairs to make money but on the lookout for a way to really break back into the music world.

07_animpianoorganmusicplayingcreepycarnivalofsouls

Sophie, Drew Barrymore, becomes his plant waterer and ends up collaborating with him on the song “Way Back into Love”, for pop star Cora Corman.

The two spend a lot of time sharing their inner feelings and old baggage, ultimately falling in love. However in every romantic film that feeling can’t last forever.

Quest

It all comes to a head when Cora likes the song, but wants to add her own vibe to it. Sophie doesn’t want Cora to screw up her song and intends to talk her out of it; but Alex keeps her from doing so. He hates the new version as much as Sophie does, but he doesn’t want to lose Cora’s good graces or his chance at hitting the big time. A fight ensues, and the two break up. Alex later tries to make it up to Sophie, but nothing works. She is determined to move to Florida to manage her sister’s store.

Will they get back together, or is it over?

Most Romantic Moment: I Wrote You a “I’m Sorry” Song

It’s the night of the concert and  Cora & Alex are going to sing Sophie & Alex’s song. Sophie wasn’t going to go, but is convinced by her sister and niece.

I-am-going-to-try-this-Well-Rested-Makeup-Tutorial-it-works-amazingcouldbefun-1024x1024maybe

Okay, here comes the big moment! At the concert, Sophie and her sister eagerly await to hear Sophie’s song. But when a new song is announced, they only credit Alex Fletcher as being the writer. Sophie is angry and hurt, gets up to leave, walking out angry and hurt. But on her way out she realizes that this is a different song than the one she helped write.

HE WROTE HER A SONG! He wrote it to say he was SORRY!

It's so Sad!

It’s so romantic. Almost every girl wants to have a song made just for her. And the fact that he was willing to admit his mistakes in front of everyone; what a man. A real man like that is hard to find.

So romantic!

So romantic!

But that’s not all. As Sophie rushes backstage to thank him and reunite, we learn that he also convinced Cora to sing the song in it’s original format.

Cora Corman: I want you to hear my new single. ‘Way Back Into Love,’ music and lyrics by Sophie Fisher and Alex Fletcher.
Sophie Fisher: What happened to steamy and sticky?
Alex Fletcher: I explained to Cora that it violated the very core of the lyric…and corrupted the purity of the song. When that didn’t work, I told her it would help me win you back. And that did it. Turns out that although she thought the Dalai Lama was, incredibly, a llama…she is, in fact, quite the romantic.

In the end the two are back together, each completing the other. (Figuratively and literally. He is the Music and She the Lyrics.)

Romantic Moment #5

The Wedding Singer (1998)

The Wedding Singer  is my favorite Adam Sandler movie. I also love this movie because of how jam packed it is with ’80s music, moments, and outfits.

I LOVE the '80s

I LOVE the ’80s

Almost every line in this film is amazing! I can’t describe how much I enjoy this film; I pretty much have the whole thing memorized.

MovieQuotes

hearts banner

The film is about wedding singer Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) being jilted at the altar by his long time girlfriend Linda.

Wedding Singer Love False Stinks

Julia (Drew Barrymore) a fellow co-worker and friend; tries to get him out of his depression by having him help her plan her wedding. Soon Julia and Robby start developing feelings for each other.

I think we love her.

Julia’s fiancé is a self-centered jerk that is cheating on her, so Robby tries to tell her how he feels. But through a series of misunderstandings, each thinks the other doesn’t care for them.

It all comes to  head when Julia decides to fly off to Vegas to be married and Robby chases after her.

hearts banner

Most Romantic Moment: Oh It Could Be So Nice, Growing Old With You

Robby jumps on the last flight, scoring the only available seat in first class. There he befriends everyone by telling them the story of him and Julia. Billy Idol has a priceless part in this. Love him!

tmb_5058_480

After Robbie finishes, they discover that Julia is on the same flight with the jerk fiancé, Glen. Robbie, Billy, and the rest of the first class passengers take over the intercom system and Robbie sings a romantic song he wrote for her.

Now this song and moment is really romantic for three reasons:

First: He WROTE HER A SONG! AND IS SERENADING HER! Now what can be more romantic than that? This is on boom box level. Every girl dreams of having a song written, dedicated, and serenaded to her. It’s one of those romantic clichés we all dream about.

So romantic

So romantic

Second: He wrote this song because of what Julia told him about her views on love and finding “the one” were.

Robbie: How did you know that Glenn was the right one?
Julia: The right one, ah… I always just envisioned the right one being someone I could see myself growing old with.
Robbie: Yeah.
Julia: And… Glenn would be a really good-looking older man. Like Blake Carrington.
Robbie: I’m gonna probably look like Buddy Hackett.

He knew that finding someone to grow old with was most important thing to her; so not only did he choose to write a song for her about her ideals, but she also has the knowledge that she inspired him, she’s his muse.

So romantic

So romantic

Third: If you actually review the lyrics of the song they are really meaningful. I had to do a write up for one of my classes on what song I thought was most romantic; and I chose this one. I love this song because it shows the commitment and value that he is placing on their relationship and marriage. A friend of mine once said that, “Love is knowing someone is always there for you, for better or for worst, sickness or in health. No matter what happens or what hardships you face, you face them together, and always knowing that you are not alone.”; and I feel this song really captures that sentiment.

[Billy Idol (Speaking):] Good afternoon everyone.
We’re flying at 26, 000 feet, moving
Up to thirty thousand feet, and then we’ve got clear skies
All the way to Las Vegas, and right now we’re bringing you some in-flight
Entertainment. One of our first-class passengers would like to sing you a song
Inspired by one of our coach passengers, and since we let our first-class
Passengers do pretty much whatever they want, here he is.

[Robbie Hart (Singing):]
I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
Oh all I wanna do is grow old with you

I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you

I’ll miss you
Kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold

Need you
Feed you
Even let ya hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed when you’ve had too much to drink
I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you
