A Sense of Sense and Sensibility

So those of you who have been following me for a while are aware of a challenge I made a year ago. You see 2013 was the 200th anniversary of Pride & Prejudice being published.

janeausten

I was going to do this whole series of posts on the book, books based off of it, films, etc. You know, the whole nine yards. (Go here to read more about it). Unfortunately…

The-best-laid-schemes-of-mice-and-men-often-go-awry-erobertFrost

Life happened and got me off course. (Click here to read more about it) But I promised to continue to reread the book, watch the films, read the inspired fiction, etc until I had completed it all. It is a very long process and I have yet to finish it. However, as I was making these posts, I started thinking about how all the other books were being ignored. That made me sad, so I decided that I would read all her books, inspired fiction, film, etc.; at the same time and review them!

Mal_huh Whoa Wow

Yay that’s a lot, but it’ll mean that all her books will get a voice. Especially the widely ignored ones like Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park.

So the next book I’m going to start doing a lot of posts on is Sense and Sensibility.

sense-and-sensiblity

Sense & Sensibility was the first Jane Austen book to be published. Before Sense & Sensibility Jane Austen had written Pride & Prejudice and sold it to a publisher. Unfortunately, that company didn’t publish it at all, but just sat on her work.

How rude

Jane Austen bought the book back and instead went to work on another one Sense & Sensibility. She sent this one to a different publisher and the work actually went through in 1811. So this book was the one that really set her up as a writer, and developed fans, making the publishing of Pride & Prejudice in 1813 feasible and accepted.

So all you Pride & Prejudice fangirl and fanboys better say a hearty thank you to Sense & Sensibility because without it, Austen might have become so discouraged that she never wrote anything else. And who could picture a world without her in it?

Here's to another 200 years!

Here’s to another 200 years!

What also makes this book special is that it is the only one to have two main characters, Marianne and Elinor. Persuasion is all about Anne, Northanger Abbey focused on Catherine, Emma is Emma’s story, Mansfield Park‘s attention is on Fanny, and Pride & Prejudice is all about Elizabeth. Yep, this is the only story that two characters are equally represented. You know what else that means? Double the Austen Heroes.

I blame her for my high expectations of men and obsessions that she caused. I mean the men she created are just tooooo perfect!

Because he knows her father’s delicate state of mind and that he wouldn’t survive without his daughter around, he gives up living at his house and moves in with her. Take a Chill Pill John Knightley

Emma (2009)

After having read the novel Emma by Jane Austen, and having seen every film of it that I could get my hands on, I have concluded that Emma and I have a lot of similarities. We are not exactly alike but there are many things that are similar:

  1. John hates Emma
  • Dave hates Me

In the novel Emma’s older sister, Isabella is married to John, Mr. Knightly’s younger brother (I know some people think that is weird but Jane wrote it not me.) Anyways John cannot stand Emma, and Emma cannot stand him.  John is so annoying, he is always having freakout sessions and is such a wet blanket. He has a short temper and always going on and on about things, a real Debbie Downer. John also has such “strong” opinions. Meaning that he won’t listen to what anyone else thinks but has to constantly go on what he feels is right.

Anyways how this relates is that this guy my sister dated, Dave, hated me. And the feeling was mutual. I tried to like and be nice to him, but it was so hard because he is such a controlling guy and not very responsive. I would try to talk to him and get to know him, but he just cut me off or would ignore me.

At first I thought I was imagining he disliked me. I’ll admit I had a few Lizzy Bennet like jealous feelings, I missed hanging out with my sister as she had all her time filled up with being with Dave. I also felt that he was always talking down to me; treating me as a child. (Even though I was older than him.) He tended to act like a know-it-all and so much more superior to me but, I tried to see it his way and thought maybe he was nervous that he was so young and trying to compensate for it by acting older.

Usually I try to avoid Dave so that we do not have any such confrontations. However, I couldn’t get out of it last Saturday, and like John, Dave was a real wet blanket. In every conversation, he had to interrupt me and debase any opinion I had. I made my exit as quick as possible as I couldn’t stay much longer without slicing off his head.

Is this too crazy?

Anyways I was telling my mother what I was feeling about Dave. She thought I might be imagining it. But just like how Emma is reaffirmed by John’s action’s I found out from my sister that, Davedid indeed dislike me (to the extreme). So “no doubting [it I].. have powers of penertration.” (Loosely quoted from Emma).

So for now all I have to say is John take a chill pill and share it with Dave.

*Currently the two are no longer together which is great for me and her. Dave was a loser and she deserves better.

What’s the Dealio

So this may surprise many but I was never a Harry Potter fan. At the risk of sounding hipster (which I don’t like) it was always too mainstream.

hipster-ariel-meme-generator-being-a-hipster-too-mainstream-1aa562

So you’re probably wondering what’s the point and where am I going with this? Well my boyfriend Michael and I struck a deal this summer involving Harry Potter.

So my boyfriend is a huge fan of Harry Potter, a ginormous fan. His Potteriness is as strong as my Austeniteness. He has read all the books, seen all the movies, knows the additional info, trivia, etc.

So my deal was that I would finally watch all 8 films, but for every one I saw he would have to watch an Austen film as Jane Austen is such a huge part of my life. I mean  look at my blogs name. So far we have seen:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone = Pride & Prejudice (1995) Episodes 1-3

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets = Pride & Prejudice (1995) Episodes 4-6

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban = Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire = Northanger Abbey (2007)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix = ?

So far he seems to have liked them. His favorite was Sense and Sensibility, because so many actors that were in it were also in the Harry Potter series. In fact, you could call Harry Potter a Sense and Sensibility reunion.

I really liked Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the best. The other ones were ok, but  I thought that one had the best plot, action, & lines. I did like the booby trap scenes in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film. Especially the chess game scene. Pretty much I’ve just been having fun spending time with him and sharing my favorite things while experiencing his.

So while I know Michael thinks he is converting me to Harry Potter and making me a fan.  In reality, my evil plan is the one that is really working, as I am slowly and subtly getting Austen into his soul.

Soon he will be one of us.
