Escape to Alcatraz

So as today is Clint Eastwood’s birthday….

Happy birthday

Happy birthday

So I thought that I would do a post that relates to him in some way…

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

So this adventure took place around three years ago. So you all know what that meanes, we’ve gotta go back in time…

Back to the Future

So about three years ago I was a junior in college and getting ready to start my finals. And I’m sure there are plenty who remember how that feels. Your mood flips faster than the weather in Wyoming. From stressed out:

fliptablesangrysurprised

To sad and unsure that you even know what you are doing:

I don't know what to do

I was a part of the history club, and we decided that this was the perfect time to take a trip.

I've got to get out of here.

I’ve got to get out of here.

We tossed around a bunch of ideas like going to the Scottish Games, Alcatraz Night Tour, Exploratorium, Wine Tasting, Cheese Tasting, etc. Of course it took forever for everyone to decide but we finally settled on Alcatraz.

Now I have always wanted to go to Alcatraz. I have been a big fan every since the Clint Eastwood movie based on a true story, Escape from Alcatraz.

The story is about Frank Morris. He was sent to Alcatraz because he escapes every prison they put him in. They placed him in Alcatraz because it was impossible to get out of.

idon'tgotthis

Not only because of all the guards, as said in the trailer, but the location. Alcatraz is in the bay of San Francisco, which if you have never been there, has freezing cold water year round. Mark Twain once said:

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

Not to mention the coordinates of the prison has a horrible pull of the current that if you managed to try to escape by swimming, the current would keep you from going forward, and you would eventually die from hypothermia.

ouch Hermione

So the story is that Frank Morris comes up with this way to escape Alcatraz by digging a hole through the vent in his room, creating a facade to hide the digging, paper mache heads and fake bodies, and a raft. He teams up with three other guys, but unlike the movie one failed to escape through the vent because he had a pipe blocking his path, not that he was afraid. No one knows whether the three drowned or escaped. Their bodies and persons were never seen again.

paris-whenitsizzlesaudreyhmmHepburn

But I was so jazzed to learn more about the island. Beside the Frank Morris story, Al Capone actually walked there as he was imprisoned there. How cool would it be that I was where one of the greatest gangsters was?

I mean he did horrible things, but it still is slightly cool

I mean he did horrible things, but it still is slightly cool

And to be somewhere CLINT EASTWOOD ACTUALLY SPENT TIME!!? MY FANGIRLNESS JUST EXPLODED!

FANGIRLJackSparrowPiratesoftheCaribbean

Words cannot explain my excitement.

You definitely made mine!

You definitely made mine!

And then of course Sam Neil when he filmed that show Alcatraz (on my to-watch list).

It was great

It was great

So I was sooo excited.

excited

And it didn’t disappoint. The bay was beautiful, and so was Alcatraz. I didn’t know that the families of the workers lived with them on the island, so there were beautiful gardens and flowers growing.

adventuresofIchabodumbrellasmellflowerkatrina

And the complex was used for so many things. During the Civil War they kept it as fortress and military prison, Native Americans were housed there, it was used as a jail, and most recently a famous author had a show there.

It was so cool being there. So much information, and such a history. Plus the architecture was amazing.

So we were able to see the rooms of Frank Morris, the brains, and his compatriots. It was pretty cool how they kept everything the same for the tourists.

jail

But because we were the Night Tour, things definitely took a creepy turn.

Gilmore girls creep

Like the hospital room. Full of these older, slightly rusty tools, and at night with a weird light. I wouldn’t want to stay long in that room.

Getting out of here

Getting out of here

Or the Isolation Chamber?

tumblr_dr.jekyllhydemirrorsneakupbehindscareaah!

The isolation chamber was were you were sent when you were causing trouble or if a guard hated you. You are in a small cell with nothing in it, and the day it is okay. But when it is night, it is pitch black in there and super creepy.

i'mscared

It was right next to the library where they were doing a lecture I wanted to attend, and that was the only way to get there so we had to pass through it. Oh man, it was scary.

Creepy!

Creepy!

And another kinda creepy factor? There were tons of seagulls everywhere. It felt as if I was in The Birds and they were just waiting to attack.

Not gulls but you understand the feeling.

Not gulls but this was what it felt like.

But it was a lot of fun and even though it was spooky, I definitely recommend it to anyone.

We’re in the Future: Good-bye 2015

So you all know what I think of 2015

BacktotheFuture

I decided that as I started my year with:

happy_new_years_2015backtothefuture

it was only fitting that after I ended my year with Back to the Future as well.

Backtothefuture

So in ending 2015, I decided that I’m going to list everything that Back to the Future II (BTTF II) got right about 2015

Other Fuel

happy_new_years_2015backtothefuture

So while we don’t fly in our cars or through space yet, (Yet I say, yet) there is another method of fuel that has there is another method of fuel besides gas that is gaining popularity, electric cars. Not popular you say? Do you remember when I wrote a post on my car breaking down in San Francisco and we couldn’t find a single parking spot as all were reserved for electric cars? I’m telling you, they are really pushing those things.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Weather Watch

rainbreakfastattiffaneyscat

While in BTTF II future, we actually control the weather, which of course is not happening now, there are two things that BTTD II was spot on about. First, that we would be able to get weather information instantaneous (which we do on the internet/phones) and that we could actually get that information from our watches.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Laserdisc Losers

Record not a laserdisc, I know.

Record not a laserdisc, I know.

When Marty and Doc first settle down the alley in the future you can see a bunch of laserdiscs wrapped up and ready to picked up by the trash men. Back in the ’80s, laserdisc weren’t super popular, but still seen as the way of the future. However, BTTF II knew they wouldn’t go far and now most of the people alive today have no clue what they are.

2015 Fashion

Back to the Future II

I was going to make these all separate, but decided it would be easier to put them all together.

*One Size Fits All*

While we don’t have the awesomeness of buying clothes and pulling just one tab to make it fit us perfecctly, BTTF II did get one thing right; the one-size-fits all craze. Now I don’t know how popular this was in the ’80s, but in today’s world it has become a thing.

*Caps Lock*

Now what is it called when you do something before it was cool, in a future before it happened? I don’t know, but that rainbow dipped cap Marty wears in 2015, it is something you see in stores today, that the hipsters would be wearing all over. If you took that and added a triangle or a quote, someone would even use it as their phone’s wallpaper

*Workout Wear as Regular Clothes*

Everywhere you look in this film people are wearing workout wear as they do their regular thing. This was happening in the ’80s, but not by people of all ages like today. Yep, from older men and women; to middle aged mothers, teens, preteens, and kids; wearing workout wear when you have intention of actually working out has become a thing. It is acceptable and BTTF II caught onto it way before we thought it was okay.

*Eye Makeup*

BTTF II really tried to go spacey on their mkeup, but they actually hit the nail on the head. For some reason I am signed up for Teen Vogue, and what they keep perpetuating is crazy makeup.

*Two Tone **

One of Griff’s gang sports a highlighted pompadour, something all the guys are doing these days.

*Studded Out Shoes*

Biff wears them in BTTF II, and today you go anywhere and it is like studzilla.

Endless Remakes/Sequels

Bad Sequels psycho-1960-alfred-hitchcock-janet-leigh-pic-21

While remakes and sequels were happening in the ’80s it was nothing like it is today. I mean look at the Spider-man series; made in the 2000s, remade in 2010s, going to be remade again?

Or what about the Halloween series? There is like 9 already! Or Friday the 13th

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Annoying Ads & Persevering Pop Ups

So as Marty is walking along, everywhere he goes ads appear; Jaws 19, Vote For Mayor, etc. Sound familiar? It seems like today we are being constantly hit by them; going beyond TV and radio, to the internet, youtube, and even Amazon.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

I Love the ’80s

'80smusic

When Marty steps into the Cafe ’80s he sees a palozza of ’80s love, which has defintely been going on today. Part of it has to do with the fact that 1985 turned 30 this year, but the 2015 has had some serious ’80s love in film; fashion, & more; it is clear we are just as gaga as they thought we would be. Although no Cafe ’80s yet, sadly.

“You Have To Use Your Hands”

BTTF II called it when they said 2015 would be  world in which you didn’t have to use your hands to play video games. While some still require it, BTTF II dreamed up the Wii and Kinect long before those companies did.

Hoverboards

While they aren’t really like the ones in the film, more along the lines of a skateboard, we still technically have them. For me, https://www.youtube.com/embed/vbOWr7y0cT4” target=”_blank”>I’m waiting until we actually levitate.

News in a Nanosecond

cousin-matthew-crawley-in-downton-abbey1newspaper

When Griff & Gang crash into the clock tower, you see a flying computer with the words USA Today on the side that captures the event. Boy was that prophetic! First today most newspapers aren’t run as they used to. They don’t have as many reporters, choosing to pay for the associated press and get their stories that way, outmoding people. Also news is now instantaneous. Things happen, and they are posted on the web, pics and videos. Also computers are the way most get their news, a lot of papers don’t hand out physical copies as much as they used to.

Not to mention that with vlogging and blogging, the news is taking a very different form.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Books No Longer Paper

bookbetterthanTV

So when Marty purchases the almanac in order to place all those bets, the saeslady mentions “back when books were printed on paper.” Now it is true that in almost every science fiction book or film you read/see, they get rid of paper books, it still is eerily to see them talk about it, knowing that in 2015 books will be available in another format.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

A Delorean? Haven’t Seen One of Those In…

BacktotheFuture

Sadly the Delorean went out of business in the early ’80s, before this film was made. And because of that, you didn’t see them anywhere. However, in the ’90s the DeLorean company was made to bring it back, but it still is a rare sight.

Check Out the Telly

Ringu Watch TV

Let’s talk about the TV they show in BTTF II. First did you notice they have large flat screen TVs that you in today’s stores? Yep, back in the day of the bulky square TVs, BTTF II saw a thiner, wider, version coming along the horizon.

They have the ability to watch relaxing scenes of scenery, just like you can today. Think of Netflix’s Christmas log/fireplace.

They also have the ability to watch six different channels/screen at once. Just like Direct TV is always showing in their ads.

Google Glasses

do-you-think-im-stupid-do-you-not-see-the-glasses

At the table eating, you’ll see that both Marty Jr. and Marlene both have glasses that give them the ability to search the web, receive phone calls, and they have to do voice commands. Sound like anything you’ve heard of? Like Google Glasses.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Phone More Interesting Than People

someonealwaysonphone

When you watch the film you’ll see that as the McFly clan gathers around to eat their rehydrated pizza, the kids are all focused on their google glasses not caring about actually conversing with anyone. The only ones who are talking, are those that were young in the ’50s and ’80s, the older generation. Sound familiar? I see that everyday.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

Skype You Later

While it is true that most future films, books, and TV shows tend to have these kind of communication; BTTF II was spot on when it said we would have the technology to communicate with people face to face when we call. Whether you use Skype, Facetime, Snapchat, etc.; BTTF II knew what was what.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

For me 2015 was a great year as I was finally able to live one of my dreams, see all three Back to the Futures on the big screen. But whether it was all that you wished or not exactly a dream year, I wish you all a happy new year, and may this one be a great new start!

I Call A Do-Over

Life'sNotFairPrincessBride

28) Something You Regret

So one thing that I regret…I try not to dwell too much on the past and wish for do-overs. After all we only have one life:

RelientKOneLifetoLive

But if I had to pick one thing…hmmm…I know just what it is. Time to go back to 2009!

Back to the Future

So when I was in high school I did theater. Yep, I was  theater geek.

the wolfman play acting stage

I did musicals and plays. It was a lot of fun and taught me a lot of skills for public speaking and presenting. If only employers appreciated it.

JobInterviewSingMusical

So one play I was in, a made a BIG mistake. In fact it is one thing I regret and wish I could do-over.

clueless mybad oops

So I’ve done a post in the past on how I have had some guys like me who I don’t like. Most of them were a bit creepy in the fact that they were extremely clingy and always trying to be next to me.

No

Now I had one guy who was my friend, but like we found out in When Harry Met Sally that’s a hard thing to do, and he liked me. I wasn’t interested in him as we were too similar in our personalities. It would have turned out very bad.

No thank youhowaboutno

So we both tried out for the school play, as we both enjoyed the theater, and won some of the lead roles.

Double double yay

The only problem? Our characters were in a relationship.

Spoke too soon

So as our characters were together, Patrick, my friend, started to blend fiction with reality and started thinking we were together.

Overly-Attached-GF-Marriage-Proposal

Just kidding. He wasn’t that intense.

Anyways, he started acting really possessive. He  started to treat it like we were together; trying to plan out dates and didn’t like me talking to other guys. This started to make me really mad.

I don't think so

This made me very upset. I didn’t like the way he was treating me, so I did the only thing I could think of. I spoke to the director.

I told him what was happening and asked him if he could speak to him on it. Tell him he noticed that he was taking the play a little bit farther then he should. I told him I needed help because it was making so uncomfortable and hurting my ability to perform well. He said he would talk to him.

Finally something GOOD!

I was so happy that everything would work out. The next day however, I the director told me that he decided not to say anything as he thought anything he said would harm Patrick’s performance.

Ryan-Gosling-Oh-No-You-Didnt-Half-Nelson

I was so upset. And I continued to be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, this really hurt my acting as my scenes with him weren’t as good as they should have been.

uh-no-gif

I just couldn’t add to his fantasy that we were “really together”, when we weren’t.

Stop stop it now!

I wasn’t horrible, as lucky for me our characters, while in a relationship, were having some problems.  So I was okay…

Mehsleepyhollownotimportant

But not fantastic like I could have been. In fact, that director was so mad at me, that he never worked with me again.

boohoo_zps058c9fe1

Now I am more mature and to able deal with such an issue, I realize that I was actually the whiner in this. If I could do it again I would do it much differently. I would have just ignored his attentions, and continued acting well.

I-got-this-reaction-gif

But unfortunately I was a teenager, and we all know that teenagers do not have the best common sense.

NothingThatcan'tbeunfixedcommonsenseMissPettigrewLives4aDay

Oh, well. It was a mistake, but we just have to move on and learn from it.

22) Something You Never Expected

Hmmmm….let me think….

Hmm

Hmm

Oooh! I know just the thing to write about.

So we are going back in time to 2009.

Back to the Future

So in 2009 I was 17 years old. That August my youth group went to an amusement park as our last group trip before school started.

backtoschool

We went on all kinds of rides and had fun.

nancydrewhardyboyssmileyeah

As we were walking along the lot, my friend Anny spotted a booth playing music. We danced around, just being silly…

Billy-From-Scream-scream-1804906-547-342

No

No, no no no no no no no no no no. I hated the Jonas Brothers. Well not them specifically. I just didn’t care for their music or the fact that they were everywhere and on EVERYTHING. There was no getting away from them.

Run Away

run-away

I was like no thank you.

No thank youhowaboutno

My friend however, really, really liked the group and wanted to enter. But she didn’t want to do it alone. So I said fine, ok.

Yeah-Dean-dean-winchester-33251540-500-300

After all, what are the chances you’ll win? Like never.

I_don't_care

So all we have to do is get our picture taken in front of a background and leave our name + phone number. Easy, peasy.

Take note Hollywood

What’s kind of interesting was that we were actually the only ones asked out of the entire group. I guess they just liked our dancing or something.

DDontHateme cause beautiful boy meets world

Four months pass. It’s December and I am concentrating on schoolwork, Winter formal, Christmas, etc. When I come home I get a phone call:

Phew!

And to my surprise it was the people running the contest. They had chosen ME out of their hundreds of applicants. I was stunned.

Say What

ME??????!!!

Mal_huh Whoa Wow what

They gave me the information on where I needed to go, when, etc. But I answered, no.

Say What

I know what you all are thinking. WHAT? WHY WOULD YOU TURN THAT DOWN???!!! (That’s what all my friends said.) Well, I just felt that as I didn’t care for the guys and it didn’t really matter to me, I’d rather it go to someone else.

Besides, you know what’s cooler than being in a Jonas Brothers’ music video? Having turned it down.

Yep, not everyone can say that. But I sure can.

Back in Time: Happy 30th Anniversary Back to the Future

Back to the future

Hooray! Today marks the 30th anniversary of my favorite movie ever, and one of the higest grossing films of 1985! Back to the Future!

Backtothefuture

How do I describe how awesome this movie is? I mean it it so amazing!

BacktotheFuture

I just love, love, love it.

theweddingdateMissyouifwenevermet

Now what is incredible about this film is that Steven Spielberg and Rob Zemeckis really wanted Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly. The only problem? He was working on the TV show Family Ties, which refused to give him a hiatus. Michael J. Fox was too sweet to leave the show that gave him a chance when no one would, (read more in his memoir Lucky Man), but also wanted to do the film. What’s a guy to do?

thisisheavybacktothefuture

When the two directors wouldn’t leave him alone and sent him a script, which Michael J. Fox absolutely loved, he went back to Family Ties and asked again. This time they agreeed to it, BUT it had to be done on Michael J. Fox’s time. So he would go to the studio in the morning, work all day on Family Ties, a car would pick him up, and he would work late into the early morning on Back to the Future.

Back to the future hey mcfly marty mcfly

Michael J. Fox talks about how at some times he would become horribly confused and forget which movie he was in. That schedule had to be excruciating, but Mike, we all thank you for the glorious end project you did. You are Marty, and you were amazing! (Still are)

BacktotheFuture

And of course his gamble paid off as the film made him a huge star. Look you can even buy an action figure of him.

BacktotheFuture

So Let me briefly recap the film series for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

The film is a combo of Science-fiction, historical fiction, the ’50s, and the ’80s. All things I love and hold dear. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), is the youngest of the McFly household and growing up in 1985. He wants to be a musician but is afraid of failing. He’s close friends with amateur scientist and millionare, Dr. Emmet Brown, Doc for short. Doc has finally created the time machine he’s been working on for 30 years. And put it in a Delorean.

Back to the Future time machine delorean marty mcfly doc

Before he can set out on his trip through time, Doc is killed by the terrorists he bamboozled for uranium (needed to work the time machine). Marty jumps in the car and takes off, accidentally going back to 1955 and messing up his parent meeting and their love at first sight moment. If he doesn’t get them back together, he’s history.

What’s not to love? Comedy, romance, science-fiction, great music, clothes, 2 songs by Huey Lewis (and a cameo), Michael J. Fox? Plus amazing gags!

starwarsBack2theFuture

So is this is fantastic film? Oh, yes!

love it

And I watch it over, and over, and over…

watch movie over and over

After the first time I saw this film, I immediately became obsessed with it. I memorized every single line in the films. I would comb through the TV listings, and watch it every, single time it came on. One time I even got up at 4:00 am! That’s commitment right there. And why not be obsessed with it? Duh, it’s AWESOME!

Backtothefutureheymcflyanybodyhomehello

I visited Universal Studios in 2012 and was devastated to see that they had hardly anything from Back to the Future. The clock tower was destroyed in that big fire, the ride had been taken out for “newer” things, and you couldn’t find any cool souvenirs. When I went in 2013, things were different. Universal Studios has a studio museum that they constantly move props in and out and they had a whole Back to the Future collection. I was having a ball, in fact I wanted to climb over the plexiglass and sit in the Deloran.

backtothefutureclocktower

Here are the clock tower building plans

Yes that was so amazing! And today, to honor this cinematic classic, I am going to marathon the three films! 🙂 And I suggest you do the same.
