I Can Make You all Go Away! Any Time I Want To!: Charlie X, Star Trek (1966)

StartrekCharlieX

I can make you all go away! Any time I want to!

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, I thought why not add an episode to Horrorfest? I know some of you might think it is weird, but they meet all kinds of different…creatures and specimens on their adventures that some are quite horrific.

StartrekCharlieX

So the Starship crew has been called to pick up a 17-year-old boy found by another Earth ship, Antares. He was found to be the only survivor of his colony, living alone for years and surviving we don’t know how.

suspicious Hmm

He’s been living there on his own since he was a child? how is that possible?

paris-whenitsizzlesaudreyhmmHepburn

And because he has been living on his own, he has no idea how to be with people.

Not good

Not good

He is introduced to Yeoman Rand and it is his first time meeting a girl.

startrek

He locks in on her which is not good.

Not good

Not good

Now Dr. McCoy and Kirk notice some strange things about him, in how he interacts with everyone but they just shrug it off as he doesn’t know what he is doing.

NothingThatcan'tbeunfixedcommonsenseMissPettigrewLives4aDay

He gets Yeoman Rand a present, her favorite perfume. But how did he know? And where did he get it from as they don’t sell that in the ship’s stores. I don’t know about you, but to me that says CREEPY!!!

Gilmore girls creep

Later they are having recreational time and Charlie wants to spend it with Yeoman Rand, showing her his card tricks he learned. But Rand wants to listen to Uhura’s singing. So Charlie gets rid of Uhura’s voice and takes over the attention in the room.

This is not good

This is not good

What Charlie wants, Charlie gets. And he doesn’t care who gets hurt in the process. And that it why I choose this episode, while it isn’t a more monstrous creature, its the behavior that is monstrous and scary in the way he hurts other but how this is something you could actually come across in the real world. Like last year’s Buffy the Vampire episode, the scariest ones are ones that personality and characters could be something you’d come across in real life.

tumblr_dr.jekyllhydemirrorsneakupbehindscareaah!

The Antares ship is destroyed disappeared…no one knows why or how. I have a thought…

startrek

Charlie!

Captain Kirk is distressed about what has happened with the Antares, and speaks of it to Spock during their chess game. Spock you know is always thinking, and has settled that there is something odd about Charlie.

spockstartrek

He and Spock play chess, but when he loses he gets upset.

fliptablesangrysurprised

And melts the chess game with his mind!

Gilmore girls creep

Yeoman Rand tries to introduce him to a girl his age, but he’s not interested. There’s only one girl on his mind.

startrek

Rand tells him it isn’t going to work out and then goes to Captain Kirk. Kirk says he will talk to Charlie but he doesn’t understand how far his obsession with Rand has gone. I mean:

completelydelusional

Charlie is

So Kirk talks to Charlie:

Capt. Kirk: There are a million things in this universe you can have and a million things you can’t have. It’s no fun facing that, but that’s the way things are.

Charlie Evans: Then what am I going to do?

Capt. Kirk: Hang on tight and survive. Everybody does.

But it doesn’t really get into Charlie’s head. Kirk senses that Charlie needs an outlet for his adolescence emotions

feelings

And takes him to the gym to teach him self defense, control, and how to release anger and such in a good way.

But when someone laughs at him he sends them away. Yes, like Billy in The Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life”, he has incredible powers and people who upset him are destroyed.

i'llmakethemgoawaystartrek

Kirk tries to assert his power of being Captain:

startrekgotoyourroom

But Charlie is no longer interested in listening. He wants what he wants and he wants it now!

And that’s what makes him terrifying. Billy was scary as a kid with icredible powers, as kids act on feelings and don’t have the capability of deeper thinking yet. While a teenager IS capable and knows right from wrong; and is choosing the wrong.

i'mscared

He then takes control of the ship, the people, everything. If anyone talks back, they vanish too. Kirk and Spock try to come up with a plan and almost get him; but Charlie is too powerful. He is going to destroy them all, but then everyone is seized by the Thasins, an ancient species thought to be destroyed.

The Thasian: We gave him the power so he could live. He will use it – always. And he will destroy you, or, you will be forced to destroy him.

They take him away:

Charlie Evans: I wanna stay… stay… stay… stay… sta…

And return the crew and everyone else Charlie disappeared. And continue on their mission.

StartrekCharlieX

A creepy and great episode. Gotta love it!

So it has been a while since I last did a fangirl post. All I can say is sorry! Unfortunately life cannot always be structured the way I wish.

Oh well

Oh well

So here we go with a few more of my favorite things.

Star Wars

Star Wars

Words cannot describe how much I adore Star Wars, although I have tried pretty hard in the past to explain it. While Episodes 1-3 & 7 had a few good moments, nothing will beat the original. Episodes 4-6: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi will always be number one to me.

star-wars-character-photos

I can’t remember exactly when I first watched the series, I know I was young because when the Phantom Menace came out in 1999 I was only seven and a diehard Star Wars fan.

StarWarsHistoricaldocuments

Episode 4: A New Hope is one of my all-time favorites. I just love the characters and the dialogue. Everything about it was just so perfect. I mean you have the adorable Luke who you can connect with his dreams and hopes. The hunky Han Solo, a rascal but has a heart of gold:

Wanted in my life

Wanted in my life

Darth Vader who was one of the best villians ever! Powerful, charismatic, scary, and has the best theme music and voice of all time.

I mean we don’t know anything about him. but we do know he is not a man to be messed with.

darth_vader

And then there was of course, the one woman I aspired to be like and who’s traits I tried to fold into my own personality: Princess Leia.

Princess Leia

I mean she was just SOOOO cool! Here was a Princess that was intelligent, powerful, strong, political, beautiful, a problem solver, rebel leader, could hold her own against torture, willing to fight and die for what she believed in, could handle a variety of weapons, a quick thinker, witty, rescues herself (with a little bit of help) etc. She was just altogether AWESOME!!! I couldn’t think of a better role model to any young girl. Thank you George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.

Dont_mess_princess

The Empire Strikes Back was just an amazing film as well. The action, the great continuation, yet giving it its own flavor; and that reveal. I mean you all know what I’m talking about (that have seen the film) but I won’t say just in case for those who haven’t watched it. Although that’s just crazy talk. I mean join us Star Wars fans already!

And the fun we have...

Or should I say Star Wars side?

And then we have Return of the Jedi. In here we see the final progression of Luke’s character. First we have an idealistic young man, turned pilot, turned rebel, turned Jedi padawan, to Jedi Knight. He has been able to conquer the force in a short amount of time and ready to continue on. But first he must face one person and defeat the dark side.

StarWarsDarker

Return of the Jedi has some of the best moments in it. Like when Luke saves his father by believing that his father still is a good man, and willing to fight for him; even dying if necessary to reawaken the human side the the dark side ate long ago. Completely refusing to give in to the dark, this causes his father to receive the redemption and return to him, even if it was for a moment. Sometimes saving and helping others isn’t going in and beating people up, sometimes it is making sacrifices and risking yourself for others.

maytheforcebewithyouStarWars

I of course am such a fan that I have a huge collection of Star Wars items. If it is something that has to do with the original series, I’m all over it like butter on toast. And I mean anything!

These three films are fantastic. Anyone who tells you different is a liar and unenlightened.

Star trek

There are those who say that it is impossible to love Star Trek and Star Wars and here is what I say:

Majorly

Majorly

You can love both and I most definitely do.

StarTrek

In fact I am not just  fan of the Original Series, although it is my favorite, I have watched every single reincarnation of this show. It is a lot to cover so I will try and hit the highlights.

startrekletsgetstarted

Of course the original is the best (and BTW Thursday marks the 50th anniversary). I loved Captain James T. “Jim” Kirk as I thought he was just amazing! Strong, powerful, intellectual, eloquent, charismatic, a problem solver, and what a hunk! He would think through every decision making sure that he chose the best for his crew. But if he had to, he would get his hands dirty.

Kirk-fu_StarTrek

Then we have Spock. Logical, efficient, unable to understand sarcasm, etc. I also liked that he was biracial too, there are not enough characters out there that are for those of us who also are to connect to. And even with that Vulcan personality and his looks are not what you would categorize as a dreamboat but he definitely is one.

startrek

Then we have Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. The best thing about Bones is his wit and sarcastic nature. I love all his sayings, I mean every word that drops from his mouth is just so sassy and fun. He is so hilarious and part of the dream team that made Star Trek a hit.

BonesMcCoyStarTrekTOSNeckSlingTurtleneck

Then we have Star Trek: The Next Generation. And let’s all face it, as much as I thought Captain Picard was the best; for me it is all about Data. What an awesome character and just downright hilarious.

StarTrekCatCat'sDon'tListen

I also had such a thing for Riker. I think it was that beard.

startrekBeardStunning

Although he was quite the hunk without the beard as well.

Deep Space Nine was okay, but not a fav so let’s keep going. Voyager was alright, my favorite character being Neelix, the cook. He was just the sweetest thing.

How romantic

Enterprise was also okay, but not nearly as good as TOS.

The new movies that came out were done very well, much better than the revamped Star Wars. The only thing I don’t like is that they made the new Kirk a little more brawn and less brain. Oh well, you can never repeat the original.

While Star Trek may go through numerous changes, I’ll always love it.

Xena: Warrior Princess

As I mentioned in a previous post that I was a huge fan of Hercules: The Legendary Journey, it was only natural that I would watch its counterpart.

I thought Xena was pretty cool and one awesome warrior, although I did think she needed a more covering outfit to fight in. I mean seriously, they always put women in these outfits that are not the best for crime fighting.

Growing up I never saw a lesbian relationship, I always thought of the two as BFFS, going out and fighting to help others. I still don’t think of them that way, but I guess to each fan their own view?

Anyways, I still remember it being a big part of my childhood.

Day 1: Put Your Music Player on Shuffle and Write the First 10 Songs that Play

I thought this would be a great thing to start off the 30 days of getting to know me. You all know I love music, and have gotten a glimpse of some of the songs I love. But like all people, there is way more in my iTunes. So here we go! Remember these are random.

10) Something We Can’t Be by Project 86

I first listened to this song when I won a free CD sampler at this three day music festival I went to. Loved the music and the lyrics. Great song.

9) Just Can’t Wait by the J. Geils Band

So everyone has heard of their song Love Stinks. (In fact I wrote a post on it last year.) That one is unbelievably fantastic, but their other songs are also really good. This one is about how the guy just can’t wait to be with his girlfriend, although other things (her father, work/school, etc) are keeping them apart. It has a great beat to it.

8) Is She Really Going Out With Him? by Joe Jackson

The best song you will ever hear about unrequited love. Ah, this song reminds me so much of my childhood. Not that I grew up in the ’70s, my parents did, but I just loved listening to this song over and over, starting at age 7 to still playing it today.

It written as more of a story then a straight out song. The guy is getting ready for a party, when he sees the girl he is in love with. Only problem is, she’s dating another guy, a real loser. He sings about the event, how much he hates the guy, and how he wishes she was with him. A truly amazing piece. My favorite lyric is, “if looks could kill there is a man who is as good as dead”. Every line is just pure gold and extremely enjoyable. Check it out.

musicnotesa7x_deathbat_animation_by_xxdarksoraxx-d3eogbz7) Dear God by Avenged Sevenfold

This is my favorite Avenged Sevenfold song off my favorite album. This is the “experimental” album as each song is vastly different from each other and any prior works they has created. Dear God is an extremely sad song about being apart from the one you love and hoping to get back to them. I love it so much, I guarantee there will be a longer post on it in the future.

6)  I’m Thru With Love by Marilyn Monroe (Some Like It Hot! soundtrack)

Marilyn Monroe sings this song in the film Some Like It Hot! For those of you who haven’t seen it, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) are two out of work muscians. When they unluckily witness the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre, they find themselves being hunted down and have to disguise themselves. They had heard earlier that a women’s band going to Florida was in need of the instruments that Joe and Jerry play, the two then deciding the best way to hide out is to dress in drag and join the group. There they meet the very attractive Sugar Kane, Marilyn Monroe. Joe befriends her, and when they arrive in Florida attempts to play not only the part of “Joesephine”, but also pretend to be millionaire and Sugar’s perfect man. Jerry has his own romantic complexities as a rich millionaire, with a weakness for marrying women in show business, is attracted to Jerry’s character “Daphne”. Hilarity ensues.

The song comes at the end of the film when Joe and Jerry discover that the mobsters who are hunting them down, have a yearly retreat at the same hotel. They decide to run off, with Joe’s millionaire character having to break up with Sugar (he doesn’t want to but knows it is better to do that than just drop off the face of the earth and leave Sugar wondering what happened), Sugar is so heartbroken that she sings this song. (Now that isn’t how the movie ends, but I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to ruin the ending.

I love this song as I feel it is something anyone who has suffered from heartbreak can relate to. I almost included it in my songs for getting over a heartbreak series, to read go to If It Means a Lot to You, but had a hard time finding its perfect fit in the series. Even though I couldn’t get it to flow with that group, it still is an amazing song and worth a listen.

5) Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship

I love Jefforson Airplane. And when it became Jefferson Starship after members left, I still loved it. And when more people left and it became Starship I loved it even more.

This song is most famous for being in the film Mannequin, a weird, silly ’80s film in which a man hired to be a window dresser discovers a mannequin who comes alive, but only when the two are alone. It was funny, strange, and has a great performance of James Spader as a nerd.

Anyways, the song is about how these two people have found each other and fallen in love, and with them together; nothing will stop them in whatever they are trying to achieve. I just love the song and music video, Mickey’s face (male lead singer) is so expressive.

4) Highway Star by Deep Purple

3) Good Lovin’ by The Young Rascals

This is a song that anyone alive during 1966-2000 has heard. It has been in countless commercials, TV shows, movies, etc. It is just a great song with amazing lyrics and an incredible beat that makes you want to dance, shake, twist, and bop along. (I’m telling you that guitar is amazing!)

musicnotes

9) Maniac by Michael Sembello

Ah, this song. Most famous for being in the movie Flashdance. A film about a woman who is a welder by day, stripper by night, but most of all wishes to be a real dancer, a ballerina.

It’s a great song that gets you pumped up (I always listen to it when I work out), and makes you want to mimic her dance moves from the film.

And our last random pick is:

all-american-rejects

10) Stab My Back by The All-American Rejects

No band can transport me back to the days of my tweendom better than All-American Rejects. They were everywhere and in everything. And I didn’t mind as they were awesome (and still are).

This song is another great that anyone can relate to as it is all about a betrayal from someone we love and trust. (This too almost made it into the Getting Over a Heartbreak series, but also had to be culled). I love, love, love it as I do all their music.

He starred in The Little Rascals as Alfalfa, as Adam Szalinski in Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. Where he really became famous to tweens was in the show Bug Juice, then going on to be Jack Downey in Disney’s DCOM Get a Clue. From there I kind of lost track of him, but no doubt he was very influential to my childhood.

Let’s take it away with 1985!

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband’s a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happened to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake’s car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright since

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
Cause she’s still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woohoohoo
(1985)
Woohoohoo

She’s seen all the classics
She knows every line
