A Fashion Statement

So I’ve talked about fashion before:

Fashion

And it’s true, whether we are so deeply invested that we know the designer’s names and collections, to whether we know what we like and that’s what we buy over and over again; everyone has some sort of interest in fashion.

modelblackmailfashion

And with that we have the things we like and dislike; our own little quirks. For instance I hate anything around my neck it bothers me to no end.

My sister always makes fun of me for that, but it feels like I am choking.

Choke

I also hate huge clunky bracelets. I have very small wrists so I always have issues getting ones that fit right.

StartrekSpockuncomfortable

Yep, comfort tends to be my number one thing.

BeComfortable

Sometimes it is more fun to just chill out and relax than be in dressed up clothes. I think Cher said it best in Clueless:

Yep:

Although that doesn’t go for my shoes as I love them high.

What is in a Name?

Have you ever bought a sweater or jacket, and thought this is just so me. It looks perfect.

And then you see someone wearing the same thing and am like:

Ryan-Gosling-Oh-No-You-Didnt-Half-Nelson

Eve though we know these are mass produced and sold, everywhere: we still expect it to be something that just represents us and shows our uniqueness.

unique beautiful young

(This is one of the reasons why I only do thrift store shopping. Except pants, the right ones are just so hard to find.)

Well, I feel the same way about my name.

Names

It’s true. We delve so much from our name. It’s one of the first things people ask, and something that becomes such a big part of our personality, whether we hate or love it.

I’ve personally have a love/hate relationship with my name. There are things I like about it, but also things I hate. Do you remember that time when everyone was looking up their names and finding out it meant “warrior” or “steady” or “brave”? Well my meaning was dumb and everyone teased me for weeks.

HateEverythingthewomen

Now I don’t know about you all, but even though it’s not perfect, I HATE it when others share my name.

sharename

My name is an extremely popular one, I was always in a class with at least three others that shared my name (or a variation). And nothing sucks more than when someone says your name, you come over, and it’s all “no, not you. The other one.”

You made me walk all the way over here for nothing?!

You made me walk all the way over here for nothing?!

And even though through my life I have probably encountered at least 40 people (from 1st to 12th grade) who shared the same name as me, I have never, ever, once been able to find any souvenir or  keychain or bumper sticker, ever.

What! Mark Wahlberg that's weird

And my name is pretty popular in TV, books, and films. I just don’t get it. It’s so frustrating!

notenoughChamomileTeaStopRage

Now why I don’t like sharing my name with others, I don’t mind fictional characters. I don’t know about you, but it seems like you search for these, hoping to find someone really cool who shares the name, with traits you can emulate.

I’d tell you mine, but I don’t want to reveal my name. I like keeping the few shreds of anonymity I have. After all if someone I know reads this and tries to connect it with me, I’ll be like:

Normal is Boring

TerribleDreamWasNormal

Being normal? That’s more like a nightmare. I mean who wants to be normal? Its boring!

normalboring

Sometimes I try to reign in my uniqueness, but that is just not fun, so all of it comes out.

normalweird

Normal & average, yawn! Weird, interesting, unique. Now that’s where it is at.

average

If we keep trying to be average and boring we can never reach our full potential.

Sisterly Roles

Ah sisters.

sisters-and-friends

The joys and sorrow of having a sister:

You love them, you hate them, you love them again. Those who have sisters know the ups and downs. Those who don’t, take my word that the above song is pretty accurate.

Now I could go on about my sisters, but that’s not what this post is going to be on. Instead I am focusing on the sisterly bond between the Dashwood sisters.

With the Dashwoods we have three sisters: Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret; although Margaret doesn’t play as big a role as Elinor and Marianne.

Elinor-Dashwood-sense-and-sensibility-2633393-894-592

Elinor Dashwood

Elinor is the eldest and she is the sense in the title. Elinor is only nineteen years old, but she is wise beyond her years and incredibly mature. She is level-headed, cool in judgement, and always thinks through very clearly on any decision being made. She’s pretty much the sensible older sister that has been copied and used in books, movies, TV shows, etc.

NothingThatcan'tbeunfixedcommonsenseMissPettigrewLives4aDay

When Fanny comes in and is completely rude to the entire family, Mrs. Dashwood is eager to move out. But Elinor is able to stop her as she can keep a strong hold on her emotions as they need to stay there longer. Now she isn’t completely cold-hearted or an ice-queen. It’s just that she is a closed book.

“She had an excellent heart: her disposition was affectionate, and her feelings were strong but she knew how to govern them…”

She has sense and knows when to say something and when not to.

frozenConcealDon'tfeel

This is something that no one else in her family does. Now it is true that keeping feelings in can be wrong.

newGirlkeepfeelingshiddenturnweird

But on the other hand that isn’t always the best thing. Having your feelings out in the world can also cause a world of hurt.

heading-banner11970857801243195263Andy_heading_flourish.svg.hi

So let’s move onto the middle sister:

SenseandSEnsibiltyFeelDeeper

Marianne Dashwood

Now Marianne isn’t just some stupid or light-hearted, fluff type of girl. She is beautiful, kind, generous, etc. The only thing is, her feelings were never held in moderation. That is, never keeping them in check. If she is happy, everyone knows. And if she is sad everyone knows.

honesty

Pretty much she’s walking around with no filter.

NoFilter

More like feelings than thoughts.

But such is sisters. I did a paper on sisterly roles in college for my family psychology class. When you have sisters, especially those close in age, they tend to gravitate to opposite traits in order to create their own identity, be unique, and carve a role for themselves in the family.

irreplacabledifferentcocochanel

So we have here Sense in Elinor and Sensibility (feelings) in Marianne.

sense-and-sensiblity

Therefore one that strives for sense as that gives her support and makes her feel completely stable in life. The younger sister sees that her older one is extremely sensible, which makes her want to be the opposite and governed solely by feelings. Also Elinor is the eldest so she also feels more of having to be dependable and responsible for the family.

Just another case of being a sister.

Boy Meets World

So I took this quiz about what Boy Meets World character I am, and got Topanga

topanga

(If you want to take the quiz, go here.)

I thought I would get Cory, as I see myself being goofy like him, but we do share some of the same qualities. People don’t always understand me, but I’m unique and interesting.

Plus, Topanga is AWESOME!!!! Who wouldn’t want to be her?

Now all I need is to find my Cory:

Bowled Over

So last week I wrote a post, Flirting With Disaster, on how awful I am with flirting. I also mentioned that this guy Verne came over and tried to flirt with me, but had a major fail. Well the story didn’t end there.

The other day I went bowling with some friends. We were having fun and hanging out. Everyone was making fun of my unique bowling style, which involves the bowling ball going reeeeallllly sloooooow. I mean it goes as slow as the girl in the Disney film Alley Cats Strike!

So my turn came up and I went up to the ball return, looking for the one I had been using when all of a sudden the a guy from the group next to us says:

“Hey I see you have a mustang on your shirt. Do you like to ride in them?”

I look up to see what kind of loser is trying to come on to me with that lame line and then it hits me………………………..

It’s VERNE!

Verne, I want to be a lawyer Verne. The Verne who wouldn’t leave me alone that day!

I was so shocked at running into him again, that I shouted you’re VERN! Then he realized who I was.

Unfortunately, sparking his memory of me didn’t really help me out that night. He told me that he had been high that whole day and actually remembered very little about me. To “make up” for this he spent the rest of the night trying to get to know me.

BoothBonesNo bowlingtonight

I also found out from him that not only did he like to get high all the time, but he liked to party all the time. I am just not into guys who just want to kill off their brain cells with drugs and alcohol, oh no not for me.

Then he tells me that he is going to be doing maintenance, “because he is really good with his hands”.

UGH! Gag Me!

ew! Gross Yuck

Like what part of that line am I really supposed to find attractive?

No

So at the end of the night he tells me he’s going home but would like to get my number.

In my head I’m like

So I’m about to tell him I don’t give my number out to strange guys who party but I only get as far as:

I can’t. I don’t give out my number because…

When he interrupts me and says:

Oh you have a boyfriend?

I know it’s wrong to lie, but I saw this as an easy out and went with it

Well kinda, yeah I do. Sorry!

Just call me Pinocchio

Hey I could have been mean like I’ve been with other guys. I figured this lie wasn’t too painful. Hopefully my nose doesn’t start growing, I think it is just right as it is.

But that is not the end of it. Check out Bad Penny
